Click tracking on WhatsApp
Which clicks Konverda measures, why a link can only be measured if the template leaves a hole for it, and how to prepare that hole in the text or in a button.
On this page
Konverda measures clicks on the links you send in a wave — but only on the links the template leaves open. A link written as-is in the text, or a button with a fixed URL, is approved by Meta exactly as it stands and cannot carry each person’s own link. This page explains what is measured, why, and how to prepare the template so that it is.
What Konverda measures
When you launch a wave with a tracked link, Konverda generates a different short link for every contact and puts it in the template’s hole. When the contact taps it, they reach your page and Konverda records the click.
That gives you three things:
- Clicks per wave — on the campaign detail, the CTR and the number of clicks for each wave.
- Clicks per contact — each contact’s history shows which link they tapped and when.
- Automations that react — the «Clic en un enlace» (click on a link) trigger fires on a contact’s first click on a tracked link, and can be scoped to one campaign.
Why it is not like email
In email, the sending tool owns delivery: it rewrites every link before it leaves, which is why it can measure anything you put in the message.
WhatsApp does not work that way. Meta does the sending, and a template is a message approved as-is: the text, the buttons and their addresses are fixed at review. Nobody — not Konverda, not you — can change an already-approved link at send time.
The only things that can change on each send are what the template left as a hole: a variable in the text ({{1}}, {{2}}…) or the end of a dynamic button’s address. So each contact’s link can only travel through one of those two places.
A tracked link in the text
In the «Plantillas» (templates) composer, instead of typing the address, add a variable and choose «Enlace dinámico» (dynamic link) as its source. The variable sits in the text as a hole; the preview shows it as ⟨Enlace⟩.
- Write the message and, where the link would go, press «+ Variable» → «Enlace dinámico».
- Keep the example Konverda proposes (Meta reviews the template with it) or put a real address from your website.
- Send the template for review.
- When launching a wave with that template, paste your page’s full address in the «Contenido» (content) step. Konverda turns it into each contact’s short link.
If you type an https://… address directly into the text, the composer tells you so under the message: that link is fixed and will have no click report. It does not stop you saving the template — sometimes a fixed link is exactly what you want.
A tracked button
A button of type «Enlace» (link) can carry each contact’s own link if its address is dynamic: it ends in {{1}}, and Meta allows that ending to be filled on every send.
When you choose «Enlace» as the button type, the composer offers two options:
- «Enlace dinámico · con seguimiento» (dynamic link, tracked) — preselected. Konverda writes the button’s address for you:
https://app.konverda.com/l/{{1}}, Konverda’s short link with an open ending. It is never typed by hand. - «URL fija» (fixed URL) — you paste your link as-is. It works just as well; the only thing missing is a click report for that button.
With the first option, Konverda fills {{1}} with each contact’s short link at send time, and the button is measured exactly like a link in the text. For review, Meta sees the address with a sample ending already filled in — Konverda attaches it when submitting the template; nothing for you to do.
In the wave’s «Contenido» step, that button appears as one more row of what the template needs: that is where you paste your page’s real address, and if the template also has a hole in the text, the same link goes in both places.
What a fixed link means
A fixed link works perfectly: the contact taps it and reaches your page. The only thing missing is the report: Konverda cannot know who tapped it or how many times, because everyone receives exactly the same address and Meta does not tell us about that tap.
Konverda tells you at two moments, without blocking anything:
- In the template composer, under the button or under the text, as soon as it detects the fixed address.
- In the wave’s «Contenido» step, one line per fixed link in the template: «El botón «…» lleva una URL fija: no tendrá informe de clics.» (the button «…» carries a fixed URL: it will have no click report).
If you want to measure that link, edit the template (or duplicate it) and put the link in as a variable or as a tracked button. It will go through Meta’s review again.
What the report shows
- On the campaign: per wave, how many people clicked and the CTR (people who clicked over messages sent). A repeat click by the same person does not inflate the CTR.
- On the contact: in their history, the link they tapped and when, alongside everything else that has happened with that person.
- In automations: the «Clic en un enlace» trigger can tag, notify or continue a conversation from the first click.
If you switch off the «seguimiento» (tracking) chip on a link in the «Contenido» step, the address is sent exactly as you typed it and that link disappears from the report — sometimes that is what you want (a map, a tutorial). A tracked button has no chip: it is always measured, by construction.
UTMs and your analytics
A tap on WhatsApp reaches your website with no referrer: the browser does not tell your page where the visit came from, so in your analytics (Google Analytics, Matomo, your shop’s own…) that visit counts as “Direct”. Invisible — as if the person had typed your address by hand.
Because every click on a tracked link passes through Konverda’s short link before reaching your page, Konverda can add the standard parameters at click time, exactly as your email tool does for every link in a newsletter:
utm_source=konverdautm_medium=whatsapputm_campaign=the campaign’s name, simplified (lowercase, no accents, hyphens)utm_content=the wave’s name, simplified the same way
In your analytics the visit then shows as source konverda and medium whatsapp, and you can tell each campaign and each wave apart. Konverda’s own tracking parameter (wtk) still rides at the end, as it always has.
Decided at launch, once
The question appears in the wave’s Revisión step, under Analítica del enlace, only when the wave carries a tracked link. One switch, Añadir UTMs de Konverda, and beneath it the address exactly as your analytics will receive it, with the real campaign and wave names.
- Not in the template: Meta never sees the UTMs, because they are added at click time and the approved template does not change.
- Not in Contenido: the address you paste there is your page’s, clean.
- Konverda remembers your last choice: the next wave starts the way the previous one did. The first time it is on.
Once the wave is launched the choice is frozen: changing the analytics mid-send would split that wave’s report in two. On the wave’s card it reads as a fact: «UTMs de Konverda: sí» or «no».
When nothing is added
If the address you paste already carries any utm_ parameter — your own convention, or a URL you built with a campaign URL builder — Konverda respects it untouched and adds nothing. Revisión says so in one line («Tu enlace ya lleva UTMs: se respetan tal cual») and shows no switch.
Nothing is added to an untracked link either (it never passes through Konverda, so there is nowhere to add them), nor to a link that opens a WhatsApp chat.
